In-Home Day Care

Characteristics:

  • Someone comes into, or lives in, your home.
  • Caregiver may be a friend, neighbor, relative, or someone unfamiliar.
  • May be half-day, all-day, or before or after school.

Advantages:

  • Especially suitable for infants and toddlers who require stable surroundings.
  • Your child should receive ample, personal attention.
  • Some light housekeeping may be included.
  • May be the most economical option for three or more children.
  • Siblings can be cared for together.
  • Close bond may develop between child and caregiver.

Disadvantages:

  • Relatively difficult to find.
  • May be the most expensive option for one or two children.
  • Benefits may be required.
  • Caregiver will not always be available (illness, vacation), and turnover may be high.
  • Your child may not get the stimulation of other children.
  • Child-rearing philosophies may clash.
  • Caregiver may not have appropriate training or experience.
  • Caregiver is not supervised directly.

Additional considerations for live-in arrangement:

  • Family's need for privacy.
  • Availability of extra room.
  • Arrangements for meals and other household activities.
