Traveling with a Baby: Trains, Hotels, and Friends' Homes

HINTS FOR TRAIN TRAVEL:

  • Babies under the age of 2 years travel free on Amtrak.
  • Try to get seats facing each other, so you can put the baby in the seat across from you.
  • Temperatures can change on the train, so dress your baby in layers of clothing and remove or add as necessary.
  • Be sure to bring appropriate food. Most trains have at least snack bars where the staff can warm a bottle for you.

HINTS FOR VISITING HOTELS OR FRIENDS' HOMES:

  • Take along electrical plug covers for outlets in the house.
  • If you travel frequently, it may be wise to invest in a portable bed carrier for baby--that way you can confine the baby and you'll sleep more easily.
  • Always carry a bottle of syrup of Ipecac in your diaper bag in case of accidental poisoning while away from home.
