Divorce: Guidelines for Infant/Toddler (0 to 3 Years)

Children in this early stage of development understand little, if anything, about the divorce itself; they are, however, acutely aware of the emotional climate in the family.

To help your little one cope during this transition:

  • Ask for help! By getting emotional and physical support, the impact of the turmoil is lessened, thus making it easier for you to respond to your young child's needs. Nurture your child by nurturing yourself.
  • Cuddle and care for your baby warmly and consistently. The parent-infant relationship continues to be central to your child's sense of security and independence.
  • Try to keep the home environment as stable and predictable as possible. For example, if day care becomes necessary, try to make arrangements in your baby's home.
